New Playground Opens at Downham School

Monday 13th April 2026 marked a special return to school for the pupils of Downham C of E Primary School—not just the first day back after the Easter holidays, but the official opening of their brand-new playground.
Lions President Lisa Hull was delighted to join Headteacher Miss Bailey, the Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Janette Sosin, Deputy Mayor Smita Rajesh, along with invited guests, staff, and of course the children, for this exciting occasion.
Following a whole-school assembly, everyone gathered outside where the children eagerly counted down to the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Mayor officially opened the new Key Stage 1 equipment (with Key Stage 2 following the next day), before joining in a second ribbon-cutting for the new table tennis table, generously provided by Billericay Lions.
The moment the ribbons were cut, the playground came alive. Bats and balls appeared instantly, and children rushed to try out the table tennis—just one of many new additions installed over the Easter break.
Until now, the pupils had only a bare playground. As many of them had said—very clearly—during assembly, playtime used to be “boring.” Not anymore.
The transformation has brought energy, excitement, and endless opportunities for play. Judging by the smiles and laughter, this new playground is already making a lasting difference.
